My take on our foreign talent sportsman

Author: adber | Files under General

First of all, congratulations to Singapore for winning our first medal in 48 years. Though the silver medal may not be won by a Singaporean born, this is still a joyous occasion for everyone in this major sporting event. Li Jia Wei, Feng Tian Wei and Wang Yue Gu have showed us their fighting spirit and they truly deserve to enjoy the fruits of their hard work.

I remembered during my ‘O’ Levels English Oral Examination, the teachers asked me one question. “Do you think that the best sportsman their deserved high salary?” My answer is a straight “Yes!”. Everybody can be a sportsman but not everyone can be the best. Sports is not just what they do best but it is also a ‘job’ that feeds them.

Money aside, for one to represent a country, they have got to be the best in their own country and then fight for the best in the world. How many people would be given this chance to go out and attempt to be one of the best? Many sportsman that came to Singapore like our table tennis trio are looking for that chance. They may not be necessarily aiming for a gold medal but at least they get a chance to go out into the sporting field and fight it out for at least a recognition and perhaps a medal.

Singapore Olympic Silver Win

The fire in their eyes, the disappointment in their faces when they failed, the shout of victory, showed us true sportsmanship. You can see that they truly enjoyed playing and they have put in alot of effort. We should be happy for them as they have played well and showed the world that they are one of the best. I am not certain if in their hearts they are playing for Singapore, however it is Singapore who has given them this chance and that I am sure they are grateful.

Imagine yourself in a huge MNC where there are alot of talented people around. You know that you have the capabilities to climb up that corporate ladder, however they are many others that do too. One day, another MNC approaches you and asked you to join their company as they know that you are good at what you are doing and they promises you a post of General Manager. Would you go? I bet many of us would immediately pack up and take on our new post in the new MNC that appreciates your talent. I know this is not a very good example to use but it does give you a general idea. Sports is not just a ‘job’ for them but it is what they only know how to do best.

Before I end this post, I would like to say that I am a neutral person in when it comes to bringing in foreign talents. It has its advantageous and disadvantageous. But I hope that Singaporeans should not just focus on slamming them down but we should upgrade ourselves and show our fighting spirits as well. We are not losers who only know how to complain. I hope one day I will not only see our foreign sportsman winning an Olympic medal but our Singaporean ones too.
